The MINUS-8 Approach

For many people, spending $300 ~ $500 on a watch is a significant investment. It can even be the first step in starting a watch collection. And we feel that if you are spending over a couple hundred dollars on a new watch, you should be able to buy a high-quality, reliable timepiece that will last for generations.

MINUS-8 Watch exists to deliver the best designs, quality and experiences possible while keeping prices affordable. We focus on premium specs, superior build quality and innovative styles that we design in-house, from the ground up. Designing from scratch, consistently iterating and releasing new products helps us continue to move watch design forward and allows the team to focus on quality, craftsmanship, and building reliable watches that our customers can wear with confidence, everyday.

We take this distinct approach to building MINUS-8, because what we have found in the market over the years is a lack of design innovation, poor build quality and overproduction.

A common strategy for brands in the lower end of the market has been to simply iterate on the past, by taking older, traditional watch designs, and changing the color, hands, bezel, strap, etc. Other brands take an off-the-shelf approach, in which they work with factories to select pre-designed watch cases, dials and straps that are ready for production. The result is uninspiring timepieces with limited personality and in the modern watch market, these strategies feel cheap and without intention. At MINUS-8, we challenge conventional approaches and are constantly on the hunt for innovation and personalization; designs that we are excited to talk about, designs that tell a story.

In regards to quality, unfortunately not much has changed in the market over the years, mainly due to business models that are focused on either high-volume or time-to-market. We’re not luxury watch guys, so we’ve been shopping in the sub-$500 watch world for most of our lives and it’s been tough to find products with the build quality we expect. Bad experiences with inferior materials, unreliable movements and terrible customer service led us to question whether you must spend over $500 to own a great quality, dependable watch.

Having started off our careers designing and building consumer products for some of the biggest companies in the world, the MINUS-8 team knows what it takes to create reliable products that people can trust. We build/tool our own watch components, so that we can control the entire development cycle from end to end and manage quality at every step. We never launch new watches until we are 100% confident in every aspect of the timepiece.

Thank you for being here and supporting our small business. If you aren’t a customer yet, we hope you give us a try when you find the right watch for you. And if you are already a customer, we feel very lucky to have you on board!
